The death of Tupac Shakur & Sean 'Puff Daddy' Combs' response to allegations
Evidently I live under a rock because this headline from last year recently showed up in my twitter feed and made me do a double take: 'Puff Daddy Addresses Reports He Hired A Hit on Tupac.'
A Mob Piru Blood gang member named Wardell “Poochie” Fouse killed Biggie, they found, and was paid $13,000 by Death Row Records mogul Suge Knight for the task. The key witness this time was the mother of one of Suge’s children, whom Kading calls Theresa Swann, to protect her anonymity. Diddy has denied involvement in Tupac’s murder.
My friend kindly informed me that this is indeed a thing. She pointed me to the documentary from early last year, Murder Rap: Inside the Biggie and Tupac Murders, which sadly, used to be on Netflix.
Not able to watch the documentary, I instead read up on it. Here's a pretty good article from The Guardian summarizing the film. The short version:
In 2006, Los Angeles police detective Greg Kading began investigating the murders of Tupac and the Notorious BIG, later leading a federalized taskforce hoping to solve those cold cases. Their finding were shocking:
A Compton Crip gang member named Orlando Anderson killed Tupac, they determined. The taskforce’s key witness was Anderson’s uncle, known as Keffe D. He claimed to be riding in the white Cadillac when Tupac was gunned down, and said Sean “Diddy” Combs offered their party $500,000 to kill Tupac, and the same amount to kill Suge Knight (but never paid them).

Diddy has denied involvement in Tupac’s murder. Knight, currently in jail on a separate murder charge, could not be reached for comment. He has not spoken publicly on Kading’s findings. Both Anderson and Poochie have since been murdered, in unrelated incidents.

In 2009, before Kading’s team could finish building their cases, Kading was removed from the taskforce, owing to an internal affairs investigation relating to a separate case. He was exonerated, but soon after retired from the department, and the taskforce was dismantled. In 2011, Kading released their findings in a self-published book, called Murder Rap, which has now been made into a Michael Dorsey-directed documentary of the same name.
The article includes an interview with Greg Kading.
I've heard theories about Tupac still being alive, and the controversy over no one ever being charged, but Sean Combs being responsible? Admittedly I don't follow this mystery closely, so hearing about this for the first time kind of blew my mind. Of course, this film puts forth just one of many theories, which are summarized nicely in this post from ~1 year ago: The Killing of Tupac Shakur.
IMHO, the way Sean Combs reacts to being questioned is totally bizarre:
“We don’t talk about things that are nonsense,” Diddy says. “We don’t even entertain nonsense, my brother. So we’re not even going to go there, with all due respect. I appreciate you as a journalist asking. Thank you.”
“I’ma tell you all this, this is very important,” he says. “I got this new hashtag. It’s called New Life. I had to start living a new life, man. The way I was approaching things, the way I was reacting to things, we all grow up. We all do things in ways that maybe you can do better. I’m just trying to figure out ways to do better. I know I’m in the public eye. I gotta handle all types of different stuff. You all have a job to do. It ain’t no problem. But I’m in control of what I say. I don’t get into nonsense. I don’t have nothing but love for everybody. God sent me on this earth to give life, to inspire life, to only do things that are positive. Any negative things that I’ve done, that’s the devil at work. At the end of the day, the devil’s a liar and I can’t feed into negativity or anything like that when I’m in control of myself. So I’ve gotta always be trying to strive and get better.”
Is it suspicious? Is he just being a weird self-centered celebrity? Is it some sort of publicity gimmick? I find the idea of creating a hashtag in response to being publicly accused of conspiracy to commit murder pretty strange, but I do live under a rock. I'm curious about what theory you guys lean towards for this one?
